Teatro Naselli
Un teatro è sicuramente esistito a Comiso tra la fine del Settecento e l’inizio dell’Ottocento anche se la sua costruzione si fa risalire comunemente al 1841. Di certo era dotato di palchetti e presentava la caratteristica forma tondeggiante. Di esso si parla, a proposito della necessità di alcuni restauri in una lettera dell’Intendente di Siracusa, recante la data 25 giugno 1826. Le opportune riparazioni furono poi effettuate tra il 1836 e il 1839. Nell’aprile del 1841, l’architetto Mario Battaglia ebbe a lamentasi che il teatro si trovasse in uno stato deplorabile e inservibile. Gli interventi si conclusero l’anno dopo. Dalla documentazione esistente presso l’archivio storico comunale di Comiso, si evince il gradimento e l’attaccamento della popolazione a questa forma di spettacolo. Fino al 1856 si succedettero alcuni modesti interventi.Infine si decise di porre mano alla facciata la cui realizzazione fu affidata all’ingegnere Sortino. Si tratta dell’attuale prospetto che consta di un portico dorico-siculo.
Pilastri e frontoni sono realizzati in pietra bianca di Comiso. I lavori furono appaltati nell’aprile del 1858 e completati l’anno successivo. Il teatro disponeva di 108 posti di platea, 10 palchi in prima fila, 11 in seconda, oltre una galleria a terza fila. Prosa, lirica e operetta vi si rappresentarono assiduamente con un alternarsi delle migliori compagnie dell’epoca. Subito dopo la Grande Guerra ebbe inizio la lenta e inarrestabile decadenza. Infine, l’abbandono mentre l’atavica fame di teatro dei comisani veniva soddisfatta negli anni Trenta presso il nuovo “Cineteatro Vona”, peraltro chiuso definitivamente nel 2005. Lo storico Teatro Comunale divenne perfino un deposito della nettezza urbana, quindi un cumulo di macerie.
Sul finire degli anni Settanta del secolo scorso, fu ricostruito su progetto dell’architetto Enzo Gianna, ma della fabbrica originaria si salvò solo la facciata. Riaperto al pubblico agli inizi degli anni Ottanta, fu chiuso perché mancante dei requisiti della sicurezza. Agli ultimi spiccioli del Novecento si pose mano ad una profonda ristrutturazione e il teatro, intitolato “Naselli” in onore alla casata che nel ‘500 elevò Comiso da Baronia a Contea esercitando sulla città una delle più illuminate signorie d’Europa , è stato riaperto – ma potrebbe dirsi meglio, inaugurato – il 25 novembre dell’anno 2000.
Arnoldo Foà, tra i più prestigiosi attori, è stato il primo a calcarne il palcoscenico dopo settanta anni. Poi tanti altri protagonisti del teatro italiano, troppi per citarli tutti, hanno rinverdito la tradizione teatrale comisana.
Il Teatro Naselli si presenta piccolo coi suoi 264 posti a sedere, ma grazioso. I radicali interventi sono stati progettati e diretti dall’architetto Salvatore Catalano e dall’ingegnere Salvino Palumbo. Da quel 25 novembre 2000 si è alternata una incessante attività teatrale ricca e di qualità come il cartellone di prosa, loft e musica.

The Naselli Theatre
A theatre surely existed in Comiso between the late ‘700 and early ‘800 although its construction is commonly dated to 1841. It had surely boxes and it had the typical circular structure. The superintendent of Syracuse talked about it in a letter concerning restoration works , dated to 25th June, 1826. The restoration works were carried out between 1836 and 1839. In April 1841, the architect Mario Battaglia complained about the very poor conditions of the theater. The works ended the following year. The documents, preserved in the town historical archives of Comiso, show the popularity and appreciation of the population to this type of entertainment. Until 1856, just slight improvements were made. At the end it was decided to improve the façade, the engineer Sortino worked at it. It is the current façade which consists of a Doric-Sicilian portico.
Columns and pediments are made of white stones from Comiso. The work was contracted in April 1858 and completed the following year. The theater had 108 seats in the stalls area , 10 boxes in the first row , 11 boxes in the second row, as well as a gallery in the third row. The best acting companies of that time, one after the other performed frequently the works of prose, lyric works and operettas. Immediately after the World War I the slow and relentless decline started. Finally, it was forsaken while the atavic desire of theater of the citizes of Comiso was satisfied by the new “Cineteatro Vona” during the thirty years, however it was closed permanently in 2005. The historic Municipal Theatre even became a garbage deposit, then a heap of ruins.
At the end of the seventy years of the last century, it was rebuilt according to the project of the architect Enzo Gianna, just the façade is original. It was reopened to the community in the early eighty years, it was closed because of the missing safety requirements. At the very end of the ‘900 a deep renovation work of the theatre was carried out, the theatre was dedicated to " Naselli" in honour of the family who in the '500 raised Comiso from Barony to County exerting on the city one of the smartest dominion in Europe, the theatre was reopened - or better, inaugurated - on November 25th, 2000.
Arnoldo Foà , one of the most famous actors , was the first to get on the stage after seventy years. Then many other protagonists of the Italian theater, too many actors to be mentioned, revived the tradition of the theatre of Comiso.
The Naselli Theatre is small with 264 seats, but very nice. The architect Salvatore Catalano and the engineer Salvino Palumbo designed and directed the works of renovation. a constant theatrical activity started from the 25th November, 2000 the plays have a very good quality as the program of prose and music.
